Small Business Saturday UK

Have you heard of Small Business Saturday? It " is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities." It doesn't matter if you are a small business owner, a customer or a local business network, you can get involved!

The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year. However the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses throughout the year. This year, Small Business Saturday will take place on Saturday, December 3rd 2016, so mark this in your diary now!

Every year, Small Business Saturday selects 100 small businesses ( #SmallBiz100) to be featured one per day for the 100 days in the run-up to December. Application for SmallBiz100 opens on 1st June 2016.

We have been involved with Small Business Saturday UK since their first year in 2013 (and that's the year when our chocolate business was born too - so we feel like we are growing up together.). We were featured on  Day 81 of SmallBiz100, and then Russell got invited to join other SmallBiz100 owners on the Small Business Saturday tour bus in London and finishing the trip with a cuppa at 11 Downing Street!

Since then every year we have been involved in this campaign. It's a great way to meet other small business owners, share ideas and potentially collaborate also. There's a wonderful community out there, and it's a great way to network, share knowledge and support each other - even though many of us come from completely different lines of businesses, often we face similar challenges and it's a good way to discuss with others and learn from them.

By being part of the campaign, it creates one voice. For small businesses, when we join together, we can have a louder voice and be heard. Recently we (and Faye from Freelance Mum) spoke to Small Business Saturday about  getting involved in the campaign - have a listen to the podcast.

Small Business Saturday also organises the  Inspire series, which is a programme of free workshops / talks covering a whole range of topics to inspire and support start-ups or existing small businesses. The workshops are free and so there's really no excuse not to attend if the workshop is held near you! But the workshops are also streamed live, so you can watch it from anywhere in the UK.

This year we are very honoured to be selected once again as a Small Business Saturday Champion. In this role, we hope to be able to help spread the words. In the run-up to the Small Business Saturday, we are usually busy exhibiting at various chocolate fairs and food shows, and it's been great to tell other food producers as well as consumers about this campaign.

Last year, we were at the London Chocolate Festival and we decorated our stand with the blue Small Business Saturday balloons, which was a great way for us to tell the customers a bit more about this initiative (and the kids just love the balloons - luckily we had enough to give away). We were also able to tell many of the fellow exhibitors about this campaign, as many of the specialist chocolatiers and food producers are small and/or local businesses too.

More information can be found on the Small Business Saturday website, and don't forget to follow them on Facebook and Twitter (@SmallBizSatUK) - the hashtag is #SmallBizSatUK.
